The Future of International Collaborative Education

Global partnerships in higher education can go a long way in providing people with the skills and tools to thrive in the workforce, especially in places where education opportunities are limited.

We find ourselves amid a simmering array of formidable global challenges. The escalating threats of climate change, widening economic inequality, persistent public health crises and rapid technological disruptions are not just abstract issues—they have profound and immediate impacts on communities globally. It is precisely because of these impacts that the need for international collaboration in education has never been more critical. This global approach is not just a noble endeavor; it is a necessity for addressing the complex problems that our societies face.

Education equips individuals with the knowledge and skills necessary to innovate solutions, promote sustainable practices and foster inclusive economic growth. By empowering people through education, we can cultivate an informed citizenry ready to confront these urgent problems collaboratively, ensuring a more resilient and equitable future for all.

In this article I will show an example of the power of such collaboration by reflecting on our journey at San Diego State University (SDSU) and a successful partnership in the Republic of Georgia to modernize STEM education in the region. With this project as a demonstration of one way universities and governments can partner to achieve profound impact through collaboration, my hope is that it may encourage a future where educational alliances frequently transcend borders to transform lives.

Embracing Collaboration for a Better Future

The wisdom of the African proverb, “If you want to go fast, go alone. If you want to go far, go together,” underscores the essence of international collaboration in education. Our experience at SDSU exemplifies how working together can achieve lasting progress. In 2014, SDSU launched a groundbreaking project in Georgia, backed by a $30 million grant from the Millennium Challenge Corporation (U.S.) and the Georgian government. This initiative aimed to drive economic development in Georgia through undergraduate degree programs in STEM fields and to enhance the capabilities of Georgian universities.

This partnership yielded remarkable results. By introducing new curricula, innovative teaching methods, state-of-the-art labs and comprehensive student services, SDSU Georgia’s bachelor’s degree programs have celebrated more than 500 graduates now contributing to the workforce. Our graduates have gone on to pursue master’s degree studies at leading universities in the U.S., Georgia and Europe, and they have obtained positions in local and multinational organizations such as Google and Georgia’s Innovation and Technology Agency (GITA). Additionally, gender equity in STEM was significantly advanced, with 45% of the 2022 graduating class being women and the establishment of SDSU Georgia’s Empower Women club encouraging even greater engagement in STEM.

The Role of Education and Collaboration in Enhancing Human Capital

There isn’t a single problem society faces that it cannot address through improved education and collaboration. Our work in Georgia is a testament to this belief. Through our partnerships, we have enhanced the professional development of over 100 Georgian faculty members, introduced advanced teaching practices and facilitated international accreditation through ABET and ACS for programs at our partner universities. These efforts have not only elevated the standard of education but also ensured our collaborative initiatives meet rigorous global benchmarks.

Moreover, our facility enhancements—9,000 square meters of renovated and newly constructed teaching and laboratory spaces—provide state-of-the-art environments where students and faculty can thrive. These investments are crucial for developing the skills and knowledge needed to tackle the world’s most pressing challenges.

A Vision for the Future of International Collaborative Education

As we look to the future, it’s clear that moving humanity forward meaningfully will require a diverse array of talents and perspectives. As educators, we have a critical role to play in fostering these international collaborations. We envision a future where such partnerships become the norm, driving innovation and addressing global challenges through collective effort.

In fall 2023, SDSU Georgia welcomed a new cohort of students across three STEM degree programs, reflecting our ongoing commitment to providing high-quality, accessible education. Our courses, which trained Georgian faculty to teach in English, demonstrate the sustainability of our collaborative model. Looking ahead, we aim to deepen these partnerships, exploring new avenues for teaching, research and outreach.

We are committed to developing sustainable educational programs that are financially feasible for families and meet rigorous accreditation standards. This commitment includes enhancing student services at partner institutions to support international recruitment and retention, ensuring students worldwide have access to transformative educational opportunities.

Our vision for the future of international collaborative education is one where we leverage global partnerships to solve complex problems, foster innovation and create equitable opportunities for all. None of this would be possible without the unwavering support of our Georgian partners, the Ministry of Education and Science, and the dedicated faculty and staff who have made these achievements a reality.

Through our collective efforts, we have shown that when we work together we can go far. By embracing collaboration, we can create a brighter future for education and for society as a whole. Our journey in Georgia serves as a powerful example of what is possible, and we are excited to continue on this path, fostering international partnerships that advance education and address the critical issues of our time.
