Current Position and Past Experience
Alicia B. Harvey-Smith, Ph.D. is the President and CEO of Pittsburgh Technical College. A scholar-practitioner, Dr. Harvey-Smith is committed to leadership excellence, institutional performance and student-success. Pittsburgh Technical College, located in Oakdale, PA, situated on a picturesque 180 acres, is a regionally accredited private non-profit institution of higher-education, consisting of nine academic schools and more than thirty certificate, associate and bachelor programs

Prior to joining PTC, Harvey-Smith served as Executive Vice Chancellor at Lone Star College in Texas. This followed a term as President and CEO of River Valley Community College in New Hampshire. During her tenure as President, Harvey-Smith expanded partnerships with businesses and industry, achieved significant success in fundraising, and led the college’s first-ever development campaign.

Education, Honors and Achievements
Harvey-Smith earned her Ph.D. from the University of Maryland, College Park, her Masters of Science from the Johns Hopkins University and her Bachelors of Science from Morgan State University. She also holds a certificate from the Harvard University School of Education Competitively-Selected Presidents Institute. A noted speaker and author, her publications include: Partnering for Success: How to Build Strong Internal Collaborations in Higher Education; The Seventh Learning College Principle: A Framework for Transformational Change; The Adoption of the Learning Paradigm in Student Affairs Divisions of Vanguard Community Colleges: A Case Analysis, as cited in Redesigning America’s Community Colleges: A Clearer Path to Student Success and Getting Real: Proven Strategies for Student Survival and Academic Success. She originated the Seventh Learning College Principle, encouraging institutions to create and nurture organizational cultures that are open and responsive to change and learning. Her most recent publication, Eclectic Insights, is a composition of poetry and essays. Her latest manuscript, CARE – Compassion, Appreciation, Respect and Empowerment: Essential Leadership Standards is being scheduled for future release.

Personal Details and Community Involvement Harvey-Smith views leadership as a “calling to serve.” Dr. Harvey-Smith serves on national and local boards including the Executive Board for the American Association of Community Colleges. An active mentor, Dr. Harvey-Smith loves to inspire people to reach beyond what they imagine is possible and to make excellence a habit.
