Current Position and Past Experience
Tonya Amankwatia is an education strategist, researcher, and innovation consultant focused on lifelong learning, credentialing, and the future of work. She advises institutions and organizations on aligning educational offerings with workforce needs through competency-based education (CBE), technology-mediated learning, and scalable assessment models.

She most recently served as Assistant Vice Provost for Distance Education and Extended Learning at North Carolina A&T State University, where she led A&T Online, Continuing Education, and Summer Sessions. Previously, she directed Instructional Innovation and the Center for Teaching and Learning at Regent University.

Dr. Amankwatia has led global partnerships, including NATO–AECT collaborations, and currently serves on the editorial boards of ETR&D, TechTrends, and the Journal of Computing in Higher Education. She is co-editor of Large-Scale Technology Implementation Stories to Inspire Change and the Handbook of Research in Online Learning (De Gruyter–Brill). She also serves on the Credential Engine CTDL Advisory Board and the Anthology Adaptive Learning Advisory Council.

Amankwatia is a Member of the Board of Directors for the University Professional and Continuing Education Association.

She holds a Ph.D. in Learning Sciences and Technology from Lehigh University, a Master’s in Christian Education from Oral Roberts University, and a Bachelor’s in Mass Communications from the University of South Florida. In 2025, she earned a Professional Certificate in Innovation and Entrepreneurship from Stanford University.

Passionate about removing barriers to learner progress and supporting faculty as designers, mentors, and advisors, Dr. Amankwatia was the first African-American recipient of the Apollo Award from St. Petersburg College. She continues to champion inclusive, high-impact educational innovation. Outside of work, she enjoys museums, Ashanti culture, live performances, and holds a first-degree black belt.
