Current Position and Past Experience

Sean Carey is currently serving as Interim Associate Dean at Wright College’s Humboldt Park Vocational Education Center. The satellite campus provides access to credit courses, career and technical education, and adult education for the greater Humboldt Park community in Chicago.
Much of Sean’s work and approach is informed by his experience in school as a returning adult learner. Expanding access and opportunity for adult learners includes a robust integration of Credit for Prior Learning options. He recently developed and will teach a Prior Learning Portfolio class, available to students at all seven City Colleges of Chicago. Sean is also an ambassador with the Council for Adult and Experiential Learning (CAEL) and member of the Chicagoland PLA Consortium.
Previously, Sean served as Interim Associate Dean of Career Programs, worked in Continuing Education, and has taught courses including Speech, Writing, College Success, and Sound Design at both 2 and 4-year institutions. His desire to serve in higher education stems directly from an early role as an undergraduate peer tutor.

Education, Honors and Achievements

Carey holds a MA in Communication, Media, and Theatre and a BA in Interdisciplinary Studies from Northeastern Illinois University. He also has a AFA in Music Performance from Wilbur Wright College.

Personal Details and Community Involvement

Sean is currently exploring and applying to doctoral programs for an anticipated 2024 start. In addition to writing about higher education and adult learners, Sean has published poems, a short play, and has written and recorded a few music albums.
