Current Position and Past Experience
With 35 years of experience, Lori Varlotta is long-serving leader in higher education. Currently, Varlotta serves as the president of Hiram College (OH)—a post she assumed in 2014 when she became the institution’s first female president. Prior to Hiram, Dr. Varlotta served California State University-Sacramento (Sacramento State) as the institution’s only senior vice president. There, she led myriad divisions including enrollment, student affairs, educational equity, division I athletics, and more. Prior to Sacramento State, she held senior positions at the University of Wisconsin-Whitewater and the University of San Francisco.
Education, Honors and Achievements
Varlotta earned an interdisciplinary Ph.D. in educational leadership with a focus on philosophy and feminist studies from Miami University (OH). She also has Master of Science in Cultural Foundations of Education from Syracuse University and a Bachelor of Arts in Philosophy from the University of Notre Dame.
Personal Details and Community Involvement
Varlotta serves on many national and regional education-related boards and committees; she is also a director on a regional health-related foundation board. When she is not working, she enjoys a good workout, a challenging alpine hike, and cooking and eating spicy ethnic food of all kinds. She recently mastered saag tofu and says it’s quite delicious.
