J. Kim McNutt | Dean of the College of Extended and International Education, CSU Dominguez Hills

Current Position and Past Experience
J. Kim McNutt is currently in his 5th year as Dean of the College of Extended & International Education at Cal State Dominguez Hills. Kim directs the work of 2 associate deans, 6 program directors and 39 professional and technical staff. The self-support college generates nearly $17M annually in tuition, delivering a portfolio of nearly 50 online and classroom based education and training programs. He has launched several programs at CSUDH including “Marketing with Social Media,” partnered with a local ambulance company to offer an EMT certificate, and a new graduate degree in Cyber Security. He has expanded South Bay access to education opening a new satellite classroom location in Redondo Beach offering professional development training programs. His college is also one of the first CSU’s to develop and offer alternative credentials and digital badges to students. This augments traditional paper awards and certificates.

Kim has held several academic leadership positions over the last 25 years. His career spans working for both public and private universities in San Antonio, Dallas, Phoenix, San Francisco Bay area, and his hometown, Las Cruces.

Kim is a first-generation college graduate. This drives his passion to expand access to underserved populations, including adult, returning and non-traditional students.

Prior to joining CSU Dominguez Hills, McNutt served as Assistant Vice President of Adult and Continuing Education at Our Lady of the Lake University, and as Dean of the California Maritime Academy. He also led online academic programs at Arizona State University and Southern Methodist University.

Education, Honors and Achievements
McNutt holds an M.A. in Communications from Southern Methodist University and a B.A. in Broadcast Journalism and Mass Communications from New Mexico State University.

McNutt is a frequent presenter at national and regional continuing education conferences, including UPCEA and ACHE.

Recently he was elected to serve a 3-year term on the California State University System Extended Education Commission.

Personal Details and Community Involvement
McNutt enjoys hiking and mountain biking. He is also an old movie fan, primarily those produced in the 1940’s and 50’s. A native of New Mexico, he enjoys and appreciates Southwestern Native American archaeology, art and culture.
