John Rainone | President, Mountain Gateway Community College

Current Position and Past Experience
Dr. John J. Rainone is currently President at Mountain Gateway Community College (formerly Dabney S. Lancaster Community College) in Virginia and has held the position since July 2013. Prior to this role, Rainone served as executive dean of Institutional Advancement; dean of Workforce Development; interim dean of Finance and Administration; and interim dean of Academic Programs all for York County Community College (Maine); Assistant Dean of Community Education and Workforce Development, Manchester Community College (New Hampshire); and has served as an adjunct professor at the undergraduate and graduate levels for the past 30 years.

Education, Honors and Achievements
Rainone holds a Doctor of Education in Higher Education Administration from Nova Southeastern University. He also has a Master of Science in Business Education and a Bachelor of Science in Business Communications, both from Southern New Hampshire University. He is a Certified Fundraising Executive (CFRE) and completed the League for Innovation, Executive Institute and Harvard University School of Education, First-Year President’s Institute.

Rainone has been recognized as a Top 10 Influential Executives on Twitter from Campus Sonar Online, 2019; a Finalist in 2017 for the Educator of the Year from the Chamber of Commerce Serving Lexington, Buena Vista, and Rockbridge (VA). In 2016, he received the Emerging Leadership Award from American Association of Community Colleges and the Giving Back Diversity Leadership Award from Insight into Diversity magazine in 2016. Rainone also was awarded the Alumni Distinguished Service Award from Southern New Hampshire University, 2015.

Personal Details and Community Involvement
Outside of work, Rainone enjoys traveling with his wife where they hope visit all 50 states, spending time with his adult daughter and her new husband, and is an avide New England sports fan. He also spends his time volunteering at the local and national levels on a number of boards and committees where he offers his time to local organizations on fundraising planning and overall nonprofit strategy.
