Mitchell S. Nesler | Officer in Charge, SUNY Empire State College

Current Position and Past Experience
Mitchell S. Nesler, Ph.D., serves as the Officer in Charge at SUNY Empire State College. In this capacity, he holds the overall responsibility of the chief administrative officer of Empire State College, and is leading the College through the implementation of its strategic plan.

Prior to taking on his current role, Dr. Nesler served as Vice President for Decision Support at SUNY Empire State College (previously titled Vice President for Planning and Institutional Effectiveness). In this role, Dr. Nesler was responsible for providing overall leadership for the college’s strategic planning processes including the development of dashboards to track achievements, overseeing the assessment of student learning and other institutional outcomes, managing business analytics, overseeing the college’s institutional research function and serving as the accreditation liaison officer for Middle States. He was previously responsible for providing leadership for enrollment management and student services and led the work of marketing, recruitment, admissions, registration, student services, disability services, the student information center, and financial aid.

Prior to joining SUNY Empire State College, Dr. Nesler was the Associate Dean for Outcomes Assessment and Research at Excelsior College, where he held progressively responsible positions in research and assessment over nine years. Dr. Nesler has taught at the University at Albany, SUNY Empire State College, and Siena College, and also has management experience in the private sector. He is a journal reviewer and has consulted with colleges and universities on outcomes assessment, institutional effectiveness, and data governance; with accrediting agencies on program evaluation, and with the private sector on leadership. Dr. Nesler also has secured a number of grants and published and presented widely on such topics as institutional improvement, distance education, student retention and outcomes assessment.

Education, Honors and Achievements
Nesler earned his Bachelor’s degree in Psychology and his Ph.D. in Psychology from the University at Albany.

Personal Details and Community Involvement
Nesler is the parent of two current college students, is an avid cook, an enthusiastic yet unskilled skier, and a generally disappointed but ever optimistic New York Giants fan.
