Current Position and Past Experience
Dr. Alyson Gill is the Provost and Vice President for Academic Affairs and Student Services at Athens State University. She has served in higher education leadership since 2015, bringing extensive experience in academic administration, instructional innovation, faculty development, and teaching and learning with technology. She previously served as Provost at two private colleges and as Associate Provost for Instructional Innovation and Associate Professor of Art History at the University of Massachusetts, Amherst, from 2015–2018.
At UMass Amherst, Gill served as a catalyst for instructional innovation and technology initiatives, building and sustaining relationships with faculty, department chairs, and deans around strategies and programming. She also advocated for faculty and students on matters related to instructional innovation, pedagogical advancement, and teaching and learning with technology, working closely with academic units to incorporate their needs into undergraduate and graduate seated and online course delivery and instructional technology plans.
Before moving into higher education administration, Gill was a tenured faculty member in Art History at Arkansas State University, where she was also the founding director of the Center for Digital Initiatives.
Education, Honors, and Achievements
Gill earned her Ph.D. in History from the University of Memphis and an M.A. in Art History, specializing in Greek architecture, from the University of California, Irvine. Her dissertation focused on Greek baths and the gendered use of space in Classical antiquity, research that brought her to Greece to work at the Ohio State University excavations at Isthmia. She later returned to Greece on a Fulbright grant to live in Athens.
Gill has received several grants from the National Endowment for the Humanities (NEH), including Digital Humanities Start-Up grants for Ashes2Art (2007) and Dangerous Embodiments (2014–2017). She also co-directed two NEH Advanced Topics in the Digital Humanities Summer Institutes: “Humanities Heritage 3D Visualizations” (2012) and “Advanced Challenges in Theory and Practice in 3D Modeling of Cultural Heritage Sites” (2015–2016).
