Dr. Ryan Gates is the Executive Dean and Senior Vice President of Western Governors University’s Leavitt School of Health. In this role, he leads strategy, academic innovation, and workforce development across nursing and health programs nationwide. He is focused on strengthening the healthcare education pipeline, expanding access to high-quality training, and preparing graduates to meet the evolving needs of patients, providers, and communities.
Dr. Gates brings more than two decades of healthcare experience spanning clinical practice, academic medicine, health systems, medical groups, managed care, population health, and value-based care. Before joining WGU, Dr. Gates held executive leadership positions at one of California’s largest healthcare districts, where he oversaw complex operations, multimillion-dollar budgets, and interdisciplinary teams of clinicians and staff. He has also founded and led healthcare consulting and nonprofit organizations, including the creation of a federally qualified health center. He continues to serve on boards supporting integrated delivery networks and risk-based health plans.
Earlier in his career, Dr. Gates began as a high school science teacher and wrestling coach.
