Current Position and Past Experience
Joshua Paiz is the Assistant Dean of the School of Technology, Trades, Business, and Hospitality at Frederick Community College. In this role, he leads initiatives at the intersection of workforce innovation, educational equity, and emerging technologies. Guided by a commitment to keeping the human element at the center of technological advancement, Joshua works to expand access to technical literacy and career-focused education, viewing competencies in areas such as cloud computing, artificial intelligence, and data analytics as essential for success in the modern workforce.

Dr. Paiz brings a unique combination of expertise in applied linguistics, education, and computer science to higher education leadership. His work focuses on helping faculty and students navigate the opportunities and challenges of artificial intelligence, machine learning, and natural language processing while maintaining learner agency and educational excellence. He is also the author of Artificial Intelligence, Real Teaching and Collaborative AI, both of which explore the evolving relationship between human learning and automated technologies.

Prior to his current role, Dr. Paiz served as Teaching Assistant Professor at George Washington University, Teacher Educator at both the Community College of Baltimore County and Montgomery College, and English Language Specialist with the U.S. Department of State. His international higher education experience includes serving as a Lecturer at NYU Shanghai. He has also worked as an independent educational, policy, technical, and writing consultant, as well as a Research Assistant at Purdue University and an ESL Specialist at the University of Toledo. Throughout his career, he has focused on expanding educational access, advancing language learning, supporting faculty development, and strengthening the connection between education and workforce needs.

Education, Honors and Achievements
Dr. Paiz holds a Doctor of Philosophy (Ph.D.) in Second Language Studies from Purdue University. He earned a Bachelor of Arts in English, a Master of Arts in Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages (TESL), and a Graduate Certificate in the Teaching of Writing from the University of Toledo.

Complementing his expertise in language and education, Dr. Paiz also earned a Graduate Certificate in Computer Science and a Master of Science in Applied Computer Science from George Washington University. This interdisciplinary academic background enables him to bridge human language and machine logic, applying insights from both fields to advance teaching, learning, and workforce development.

His scholarship and leadership focus on artificial intelligence, educational technology, applied linguistics, faculty development, and workforce innovation. Through his research, publications, and administrative leadership, Dr. Paiz continues to champion equitable access to technology education and to position community colleges as engines of social mobility and economic opportunity.

Personal Details and Community Involvement
Outside of work, Dr. Paiz enjoys knitting and playing video games. He also enjoys visiting theme parks with his family.
