Cathrael Kazin | Chief Academic Officer at College for America, Southern New Hampshire University
Current Position and Past Experience
Since 2012, Cathrael Kazin has served as Chief Academic Officer for College for America at Southern New Hampshire University (CfA). Kazin helped create CfA and designed its unique project-based CBE model. She serves on the NEASC Commission on Institutions of Higher Education and is Project Director for “JUICE,” a $3.93 million federal grant to build competency-based alternatives to developmental education. Before moving to her current role, Kazin worked at Educational Testing Service, where she served as Executive Director for the Higher Education division and helped develop next generation assessments for 21st century skills. For five years, Kazin worked in Israel as the Head of English at the National Institute of Testing and Evaluation.
Earlier in her career, Kazin served at the US Department of Labor, both as an attorney and as an Acting Special Assistant to Secretary of Labor Robert Reich . She has taught widely and is a former member of the University of Iowa English Department.
Education, Honors and Achievements
Kazin earned her AB with Highest Honors in English from Smith College and her PhD, also in English, from Cornell University. She earned her JD in Law from the University of Pennsylvania Law School, where she was an editor of the University of Pennsylvania Law Review.

I am passionate about the power of higher education to transform people’s lives and have the privilege of witnessing this daily at CfA. I also love to travel – and to make things, primarily jewelry and multi-media collages.
