Shirley Weaver | Geriatrics Education Mentor, University of New England

Current Position and Past Experience
Shirley Weaver is a retired professor of Family Medicine of the University of New England College of Osteopathic Medicine (UNE COM), where she established the Area Health Education Center and the Geriatrics Education Center. . Following her UNE COM retirement, she served as Asssistant Director of the Harvard Geriatrics Education Center. For the past six years she has served as a community volunteer Geriatrics Education Mentor in the UNE COM Division of Geriatrics.

Education, Honors and Achievements
Weaver holds a Doctor of Philosophy in Higher Education from Michigan State University. She also has a Master of Arts in Higher Education from the University of Minnesota along with a Bachelor of Science in Medical Technology from Hamline University. Certificates that Weaver has achieved are MT(ASCP) – Medical Technologist (American Society of Clinical Pathologists), Exfoliative Cytology and Advacned Studies in Gerontology.

Personal Details and Community Involvement
Shirley is an active volunteer in organizations that focus on the health and welfare of Maine’s people who are most vulnerable. At the local level, she is a founding member of her town’s Age Friendly Community organization, No Place Like Home. As a military veteran she is an active member of Vet2Vet Maine board of trustees and a companion to veterans in need. At the state level she has long served as a trustee of the Maine Health Access Foundation and is a Community Representative for the Maine Council on Aging. Her commitment to healthy aging is also evidenced in caring for her 250 year old home, where she tends to its constant need of loving care and its three acres of lawn.
