Sandra Kallio | Senior University Relations Specialist, University of Wisconsin System
Current Position and Past Experience
Sandra Kallio joined the University of Wisconsin System Office of Academic and Student Affairs in September 2017. She provides strategic communications support for initiatives led by the Vice President, including the UW System Math Initiative, 360 Advising Initiative and implementation of the Navigate student success management system.
She previously was a senior writer with the University of Wisconsin-Extension, a position she began in 2015 to chronicle development of the UW Flexible Option. This work, funded through a Lumina Foundation grant, included editing and writing reports, academic research materials, web content for the UW Flexible Option case study, and related communications.
She began her career with the University of Wisconsin in university relations for UW-Extension in 2012 and later for UW Colleges and UW-Extension (both since restructured in 2018), leading media relations and providing strategic communications support for the central administration.
Prior experience includes roles as an assistant features editor, business reporter, features writer and special section editor for the Wisconsin State Journal; planning analyst for the Wisconsin Department of Public Instruction; and special education teacher in Milwaukee.
Kallio served a term on the Centro Hispano of Dane County Board of Directors from 2017 to 2020.
Education, Honors and Achievements
Kallio earned a BS in education and MA in journalism at the University of Wisconsin-Madison.
Honors include awards from the Public Relations Society of America-Madison Chapter, Milwaukee Press Club, Wisconsin Newspaper Association and Mental Health Center of Dane County for work she contributed to through UW-Extension or the Wisconsin State Journal.
