Current Position and Past Experience
Mariann Hawken currently works as an instructional technologist at Bowie State University, delivering technical training and assisting faculty as they prepare online courses. She is the coordinator for many Blackboard systems and also manages Turnitin, Smarthinking, and Starfish. Faculty development programs include weekly workshops, walk-in support clinics, and a summer program, Learning Online, Teaching with Technology Online (LOTTO) Institute. She teaches the occasional online course in media technology and society or technical writing.
Hawken research interests include course redesign, faculty development, student retention using technology, plagiarism and responsible documentation. A self-proclaimed Jane of All Trades, Ms. Hawken is also a freelance writer, editor and designer; past work includes the development of a training CD-ROM for graders of the AP English essay and editing book reviews for Educational Researcher.
Education, Honors and Achievements
Hawken recently finished a Master of Distance Education, focusing on teaching and training, and a certificate in distance education leadership. She also has two additional graduate degrees in Instructional Technology (M.Ed., 2006) and English (M.A., 2000). Hawken is a Blackboard MVP in the inaugural class of 2013.
Personal Details and Community Involvement
Hawken served as a designer for OST Healthy Start, a charitable organization to promote prenatal health care and parenting skills for the Oglala Sioux tribe of South Dakota. She is married to the author Sam Hawken and has a teenage son with autism.
