Current Position and Past Experience
Lauren Smith is currently Director of Adult Learning and Director of the Warhawk Emergency Fund at the University of Wisconsin-Whitewater and has been in this position since 2013. Prior, she was a professor and department chair in Women’s and Gender Studies. She has also served as a tenured professor of English and chair of Women’s Studies at Eastern Illinois University and a visiting lecturer at the University of Iowa.

Education, Honors and Achievements
Smith holds a Doctor of Philosophy from the University of Iowa (1994), a Master in Fine Arts from University of Iowa (1989), and a bachelor’s degree from Davidson College (1985). She has won a Wisconsin Arts Board Award, an Illinois Arts Council Grant, a Fulbright Fellowship, and an Annie Dillard Award for her nonfiction writing, along with awards and recognition for her poetry. She has numerous publications in scholarly, creative nonfiction, and poetry publications; one co-written and one co-edited book with University of Iowa Press; and a chapbook with Frank Cat Press.

Personal Details and Community Involvement
Dr. Smith likes to hike and travel when she can squeeze those things in and is currently planning to follow the path French Resistance spy Virginia Hall took across the Pyrenees when she was escaping from the gestapo. She learned how to draw rudimentary comics from her mother and keeps a comic-book-style journal.
