Current Position and Past Experience
John Thelin has been a Professor of Higher Education and Public Policy in the College of Education at the University of Kentucky since 1996. Thelin has held positions at The Claremont Colleges, the Association of Independent California Colleges and Universities, the College of William and Mary and Indiana University prior to his current role. Thelin is author of A History of American Higher Education. His forthcoming book, American Higher Education: Issues and Institutions will be published in early 2017.

Education, Honors and Achievements
Thelin earned his AB from Brown University in 1969 with a concentration in history and election to Phi Beta Kappa. His earned his MA and PhD from UC Berkeley in 1973.

In Spring 2004 John was selected by the UK Alumni Society to receive one of its "Great Teacher" Awards. He received the University Provost’s Award for Teaching Excellence in 2006. In April 2007 the American Educational Research Association conferred on him the Exemplary Research Award for Division J: Postsecondary and Higher Education research. In November 2011 John received the “Outstanding Research Achievement Award” from the Association for the Study of Higher Education (ASHE). He is author of A History of American Higher Education, published by the Johns Hopkins University Press. His latest book is The Rising Costs of Higher Education, published in March 2013 by ABC CLIO.

Personal Details and Community Involvement
In 2006 John was selected as an outstanding scholar-athlete alumnus as part of the Ivy League’s 50th anniversary celebration. He served as president of the community United Way in Williamsburg, Virginia. John is a member of the American Enterprise Institute’s working group on the future of higher education.
