Current Position and Past Experience
Cathy Maris is currently Assistant Dean of Community Learning and Engagement in the Susanne M. Glasscock School of Continuing Studies at Rice University. She provides strategic oversight and collaborates with university faculty, instructors and campus and community partners to conceive, develop and implement in person and online courses and public programs in the arts, humanities, sciences, social sciences and creative arts annually serving more than 2,500 adults aged 18-99 years.
Cathy directed the Glasscock Schoolās Sol LeWitt Project, co-chairs the Glasscock School Art Committee and serves on the Deanās Leadership team. She has over 25 years of experience developing, directing and sustaining collaborative initiatives in higher education, continuing education, lifelong learning, museum education, arts education, early childhood education, family learning and intergenerational learning.
She was the inaugural Executive Director and Education and Grants Director of Kidzu Childrenās Museum in Chapel Hill, North Carolina and has held positions with the University of North Carolina-Chapel Hill Frank Porter Graham Child Development Institute, the University of California-Berkeley Maternal and Child Health Program, and Seattle Childrenās Hospitalās Child and Infant Development Project.
Education, Honors and Achievements
Cathy holds a BA in psychology from Carleton College and an MA in clinical psychology from the University of British Columbia.
Personal Details and Community Involvement
Cathy is particularly interested in creativity, arts, learning across the lifespan and fostering engagement with diverse communities. She loves painting, drawing, writing and photography and is an avid museum-goer. Cathy also enjoys exploring cities and nature, preferably with her camera in hand.
