Current Position and Past Experience
Shirley Adams is the Provost of Charter Oak State College, a position she has held since 2002. Charter Oak State College is Connecticut’s online, public, adult completion college. Previous positions: Dean of Dexter Hanley College, University of Scranton (the college for adult students), Scranton, Pennsylvania; Dean of the College for Continuing Education, Drake University, Des Moines, Iowa; Consultant in the Community College Division, Iowa Department of Public Instruction, Des Moines, Iowa; Associate Head of Adult Education, Kirkwood Community College, Cedar Rapids, Iowa; and Coordinator/Instructor, Adult Learning Center, Norfolk Virginia Public Schools, Norfolk, Virginia.

Education, Honors and Achievements
Adams earned her Ph.D. in Professional Studies with an emphasis in adult and vocational higher education from Iowa State University; M.A. in Education with an emphasis in community college administration from the University of Iowa, and a B.A. in secondary education/English from the University of Northern Iowa. She also attended the Management of Lifelong Education workshop at Harvard University.

Personal Details and Community Involvement
Adams enjoys bike riding. In the fall she spent a week biking the islands in the Wadden Sea. This fall she is off to explore Portugal. She also enjoys yoga and is a student in the 200 hour yoga teacher training program. She is actively involved with her church serving as secretary of the vestry, chair of the outreach committee, and lector. Her spare time is spent reading and watching the news—a bit of a news and political junky.
